Make Lemonade!
October 30th, 2009
Mother Nature dumped more than 3 feet of lemons on us over the last 2 days, so I have to make lots and lots of lemonade. Here’s how an artist makes lemonade.
Start with a nice scene that you’d like to paint someday:

Nice scene without snow
Procrastinate until one day you see the scene with snow – lots of snow:

Maybe TOO Much Snow
Wait until the sun comes out the next morning, and voila , there’s your painting:

A Winter's Morning
Now we have to dig out -

How can I barbecue tonight???

View out my studio yesterday
Now, back to painting. I have to put some whiskers on my cat…

It looks like it’s the dead of winter in your neck of the woods. Did fall just pass you by? Happy to see from your painting the sun is shining. I ran into a plein air painter that I hadn’t seen in over a year and he said that this past winter (he lives in the Pacific Northwest) that the weather was so bad he didn’t even think about setting up on location to paint. He took the time to really study color theory and made the most of what otherwise would have been down time for him. It paid off, his new work oozes with color harmony and strong value structure.
Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, a blizzard before Halloween! I’ve never seen that before. I’m ready to ship off to Hawaii for the winter (it’s a nice idea, anyway).
Marianne, I like that painter’s lemonade recipe! Great advice.
Hi Denise, nice blog! Love the steps to a painting from summer scene, to gray winter, to sunny Colorado day with shadows.
Thanks, Gail! Did you get enough snow over the weekend? I’d say enough is enough – when’s the next flight to Mexico?
